Abstract: This dissertation is a detailed study of the administrative, financial, economic and agricultural development of the Hospitaller Commandery of San Giovanni Battista Capo di Ponte in Parma from the seventeenth century to the eighteenth century, with a thorough geographical description of the location of the commandery. Like any commandery, the main purpose of this commandery was to generate revenue destined to the Common Treasury of the Order of St John through the annual rent and sharecropping collections, through responsions and through the cultivation of agricultural produce. This commandery was part of a whole structure and was bound to follow the orders issued from the Convent based in Malta. On the other hand, this commandery could not exclude itself from the events happening in its surroundings. The result was that this commandery had a close relationship with the rulers of the Duchy of Parma and what effected the duchy, had repercussions also on the commandery. The information on the commandery under survey was primarily obtained from the cabreo and miglioramenti manuscripts present at the Archives of the Order of St John at the National Library of Malta, in Valletta, covering the period of almost two hundred years, from 1606 to 1773. Additional information was obtained from manuscripts like the Liber. Concilorum, Magni Magistri, Liber Conciliorum Status and the Liber Bullarum, amongst others. To try and gather more information on this commandery, I have made contacts with the Archivio dello Stato di Parma to try and trace more documentation on this commandery. Unfortunately, the reply from their behalt was too vague, with no confirmation on whether there is in fact any material associated with this commandery. Even though the documents available in Malta contained a detailed account of the state of the commandery, this lack of further documentation led to two major problems; first that the National Library of Malta is in possession of only one cabreo of this commandery, dated 1606, and there is a gap of almost a century between the manuscripts available, from 1682 till 1773.
