Abstract: This study entails an item analysis of the annual examination papers for Forms I and II of the area secondary schools in Malta. It also compares the attainments in science for boys and ·girls; and that of pupils attending large or small schools. The item analysis was carried out upon the responses of the same 430 pupils who sat for both the 1983 Form I and the 1984 Form II Integrated Science examinations. Errors were also analysed and discussed. The results of both examination papers were found valid and reliable. Sex differences were found reaching a level of significance always in favour of the girls. This difference was also found when the sample was differentiated by school size.
