Abstract: This study focuses on the acquisition and use of L2 as a social semiotic phenomenon based on Halliday's systemic functional approach. The acquisition and use of Italian L2 especially in its written form are considered as means to futfil several overarching semiotic metafunctions, always present in every text albeit in different measures. The research has collected information about writing in Italian L2 from teachers and students by means of a questionnaire. Then a corpus of texts written in Italian L2 by male and female students of different ages was gathered so as to analyse different aspects of the ideational, interpersonal, and textual metafunctions. The most relevant conclusion concerns the fact that although males and females make different choices on the level of field these differences are then not transmitted on a grammatical level in the L2 unlike what emerged in similar studies in the L 1. It seems that some concepts which in the L 1 are imbued with a semantic function are neutralised in the L2 because the speaker or writer of the L2 is still not competent enough in manipulating the L2.
