The implication of digital information and communication technology (ICT'S) on the social interaction and urban public space

Abstract

In recent years, the use of Wi-Fi via digital and mobile devices by young generations in public urban spaces has become a common scene in the public realm. Digital information and communication technologies impact many aspects of our lives, including home, work and leisure. Real-life interactions are constantly replaced by mobile phone conversations, texting, e-mailing and instant messaging via online social networks. More specifically, digital and technological advancements influence the manner in which children and young people develop social relationships and connections. The excessive use of digital and mobile devices have a significant impact on social behaviour and the way in which young generations interpret, use and appreciate urban public spaces. This research therefore investigates the interrelationship between technological advancement, the design of public spaces and the social interaction between younger generations so as to identify and develop design implications for urban public spaces which can positively influence the user's experience and behaviour in such spaces. Additionally, the integration of the digital layer into the public space is not simply about the incorporation of digital devices, but also about a whole new vision of the public space, which provides opportunities for young people to explore, initiate, and experience different learning outcomes.
