Abstract: The relative attainment in Maltese, English and Mathematics of Maltese boys and girls in Year Three of the State Primary Schools was studied to discover whether any difference could be found in relation to their being taught by a male or a female teacher. The sample studied contained 44 mixed classes taught by a male teacher and 48 mixed classes taught by a female teacher, with a total number of 2178 children (1104 boys 10?4 girls). The attainment of girls was found to be generally superior to that of boys in all three subjects, regardless of whether these were being taught by a male or a female teacher.
