Abstract: The aim of this dissertation is to research recent developments relating to consumer protection in Malta and to examine their past, present and potential successes or failures. The study contains five chapters which will attempt to analyse and describe a sequence of events leading to the current situation. The first chapter will explain the notion of consumer protection and its development worldwide with special reference to the United States and the United Kingdom. This includes the four basic consumer rights established during President Kennedy's term, and the UN Guidelines set forth by the United Nations in 1985, as a guide to countries which did not yet have a recognised consumer protection mechanism.
