Abstract: With the aim of addressing the erotic power engendered by architecture, through philosophical discourse, this dissertation aims at examining the constructs that mould relationships and exchanges with architectural space. In doing so, it focuses on how architects use their professional tools and aesthetic judgement to permeate the materiality of their trade with this kind of eroticism. The study is based on the understanding that an architectural space and programme is always a blend of promises and invitations. Drawing from its poetic essence architecture may project sensuous and erotic characteristics. It enhances life by providing that kind of setting which permits the embodied self to be truthful to the deepest feelings. The Self expects a building to provide an obliging setting in which to experience emotions that may range from pleasure to angst, and also grief. Ideally, the self's consciousness is complemented by the aura that emanates from the components that sum up architecture. This subtle connection and exchange may be compared to an affectionate human relationship, where the partners are sensitized to each other's feelings. Architecture must be perceived as the extension of the Self, susceptible to bodily sensorial experiences. Upholding Paul J. Karlstrom (2000) assertion that sexuality, and consequently eroticism, is intrinsically linked to identity and 'selfhood' this study contends that the deepest and purest link with architecture must be through the erotic. This must be reciprocal and mutually accommodating. The study draws a linguistic comparative analysis, based on the assumption that architecture is akin to a language, with its own grammar, and power of affectivity. Not unlike poetry, architecture uses its aesthetic tools to create an intense connection between the Self and the environs. If architecture is a source of sensual stimuli, then it is understandable that these are triggered by implanted semiotics. Therefore, this study is an investigation into architectural semiotics with particular emphasis on those that affect the 'sexual' wellbeing of its users. The study proposes a framework mechanism that unveils the erotic trough the Self within architecture, and the consequent tendencies and respective mechanisms it instigate. Ultimately, it delves into the semantics of architecture, the Self's experience of it and the material constitution that prompt the erotic with its users, hence demonstrating its relevance in architecture discourse.
