Abstract: This dissertation argues that Pope Francis’ socio-political thought is consistent on a micro and macro level. It studies his understanding of the role of the individual Christian in the polis, his vision for society, and also on an international scale in the relation among nations. What is evident in all three levels is the interconnectedeness that exists between all that is created. This interconnectedeness exists between all individuals within the society, who through leadership can be formed into “the whole that is greater than the sum of parts”: a people. The image of the people is based upon an Argentinian Theology of the People that emerged from VCII’s image of the Church as the People of God. Everything is interconnected and seeing things in a disconnected way is erroneous and harmful. Hence one must consciously strive to build a healthy “whole” where all can flourish. This interconnectedness is evident in the struggles our societies are facing, these are also linked to one another and can be healed if they are seen together, in other words observed from the point of view of a greater whole. In fact this is the reason why integral ecology, the central concern of Laudato Si` is stressed continously by Pope Francis, where the relationships between humans, with the economy, money and the environment are rebuilt. Lastly this interconnectedness can be seen on an international level, where the struggles the world is facing nowadays cannot be solved by one nation, but by all coming together. These struggles such as migration, wars, the present pandemic, call for all nations to come together in a spirit of dialogue, where a process of sowing the right seeds, will hopefully lead to a better world for our future generations.
