Abstract: This dissertation deals with the spelling errors of 453 Maltese learners of mixed ability attending four Malta Government Secondary Schools during the academic year 1979-1980. Of this number 221 were girls and 232 were boys. The sample was representative of the whole Maltese Form One Secondary School population and it was drawn from both rural and urban areas. The discussion covers the following aspects: a. Justification of the investigation. b. Administration of the Test material. c. A compilation of a corpus of errors made by my sample. d. A classification and description of errors. e. Suggestions for remedial measures.
