| Abstract: | This dissertation covers the different waste management options relevant to small island developing states, which enable them to come up with a sustainable waste management strategy. The vulnerability of small island developing states poses a great challenge when it comes to implementing integrated sustainable solid waste management. A case study on sustainable waste management for the island of Malta is undertaken, where the national legislation and international obligations are taken into consideration. This case study covers those wastes defined in the Waste Framework Directive, with special reference to those types of wastes most relevant to the Maltese situation. Furthermore a number of recommendations are put forward taking into account the financial constrain ts. This dissertation aims to identify primary issues relevant to sustainable waste management issues in small island developing states. The presentation format for this dissertation has been chosen to include various tables and figures in order to provide a better visual understanding and appreciation of the possible approaches to the management of waste in small island developing states. |
