Abstract: This thesis explores the interface between art and poetry in the Pre-Raphaelite Era. The Introduction primarily locates the art movement within the Victorian period and the social, literary and artistic claim that lead to its inception. The members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, or 'P.R.B.' and their associates are introduced along with their participation (or not) in the P.R.B. magazine The Germ. The then recent genre of the novel is referred to in the light of the rising interest in illustrated literature although the main interest in the thesis moves away from visual additions to literature, towards the interface with poetry. Chapter One delineates the events and characters that brought about the Pre Raphaelite 'revolution'. William Holman Hunt, John Everett Millais and Dante Gabriel Rossetti form the first triumvirate and aims of the P.R.B. The parts that Dante Gabriel Rossetti, his sister Christina Georgina and their brother William Michael play throughout the history of art and poetry are also described, though Christina and Dante Gabriel share most of the spotlight in Chapter Two, being the more prolific poets of the three siblings.
