Abstract: Fantasy as a genre is as yet thin on the ground of Maltese Literature. The translation of The Lord of the Rings into Maltese may serve the purpose of bringing this work, which has been translated into countless languages, within the reach of those who are more comfortable reading it in their native tongue. This annotated translation has been an attempt to achieve a balance of formal and dynamic equivalence as expounded in the writings of Eugene Nida and in Umberto Eco's Mouse or Rat? Translation as Negotiation The notes have discussed the difficulties of translation and reasons for my final choices. Translations of The Lord of the Rings into French and Italian have been used for comparative purposes and, where necessary, to help me in my choices.
