Abstract: This thesis shows that, during the period 1955 and 1970, there was a widespread fear of Dom Mintoff, and the Maltese religious organisations, backed on by the Catholic hierarchy, had campaigned for the preservation of the Church's position in society. The membership of the Malta Labour Party in the Socialist International and AAPSO, the latter being considered as Communist oriented, not agreeable to the mentioned organisations.
