Citation: Peresso, G. (2003). Ursula K. Le Guin's Earthsea Quintet and J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series : a narratological and structural analysis (Master's dissertation).
Abstract: This dissertation attempts to define the contemporary high fantasy novel, and show how the sub-genre is a reworking oft hen narratological patterns of the traditional wonder tale, later described in detail. The dissertation demonstrates how these structural patterns provide young adult readers with both literary experience as well as fictional companions, in preparation for and during, their adolescent coming of age. As adults, living in a world wrought with many troubles and facing diverse challenges, the fantasy quest stories of their youth present a general background against which to discuss solutions and ideals.
