Abstract: Similar to other developing countries, Malta has witnessed a considerable increase in the construction and transport sector, over the last decade. The increase in population in Malta together with the high car ownership trends, have placed an added burden on Malta’s road network. In parallel, Malta’s urbanisation rate is such that it has led to an increased pressure on land, services, transport and resources. Rural areas are being transformed into towns and cities, with vegetation and landscape being replaced by concrete, asphalt and stone. Both urbanisation and human activities have changed the way energy is being absorbed, stored and transmitted into the surrounding environment. The reduction of vegetation has led to spaces to experience an overall increase in temperature. In turn, this has affected the way people travel, many of whom prefer using their private cars instead of walking, cycling or using public transport. This has led to an increase in vehicles on our roads and thus, more greenhouse gas emissions. The more we impermeabilise our urban areas, the more stormwater runoff is generated, which is an issue associated with an increased loss of water resources. The consequent result is a decrease in groundwater recharge, in a country which cannot rely solely on freshwater. This research shall analyses the definition of “sustainable infrastructure” and proposes an integrated design framework for more sustainable streets for all users, shall be proposed. The integration of blue (water-based) and green (vegetative) infrastructure, along with infrastructure for pedestrians, cyclists, as well as public transport users are investigated. Challenges and gaps are addressed, so as to provide a more resilient, stable and sustainable urban infrastructure. Therefore, following a thorough literature review of research papers and guidelines related to the design of sustainable infrastructure in urban streets in various countries, this study takes into account international design methods being adopted to provide sustainable streets for all. The main practices and criteria used have been analysed and compared with the current practices being adopted in Malta. The available information on the chosen topic were used as secondary sources. There are various types of secondary sources, including report, published books, research papers, journal articles, and other related sources. Other secondary sources also included interviews, newspaper reports and surveys conducted in Malta. In order to find any gaps that weren’t identified by the secondary sources, primary source were considered. This dissertation aimed to improve the integration of sustainable concepts in our local streets, by introducing new guidelines and land policies to find a better-balanced design for urban streets.
