Abstract: This dissertation is an analysis of three foreign film adaptations of Wuthering II eights in terms of the adaptors' reworking of Bronte's major themes in predominantly visual images. Each chapter consists of a thematic study, based on close observation of corresponding film sequences juxtaposed to the novels' equivalents. The first chapter assesses the film adaptor's treatment of Bronte's religious theme in the light of Cohen's masking-unveiling technique. It also seeks to establish whether the film adaptations in question have managed to unveil the roots of the novel's sadism in terms of Battestin's and Armour's theory of analogical autonomy. The second chapter assesses the film adaptors' recreation of Bronte's arboreal imagery as well as her rock and water imagery through Metz's classification of connoted signification. The third chapter seeks to determine whether the musical scores and sound-effects codes of these film versions succeed in echoing thematically the sound of Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights. The film adaptations directed by Carlos Siguion-Reyna, Metin Erksan and Jacques Rivette have been chosen as the illustrative basis of this comparative analysis. What the conclusion reveals is that, while Rivette's film adaptation towers above the others in terms of its thematic faithfulness to Bronte's novel, even Reyna's and Erksan's films capture some of Bronte's major concerns in a truly creative way.
