Abstract: In the light of critical re-valuations of fidelity criticism in the study of film adaptation, this dissertation will consider the link between this resilient approach and the valuation of medium specificity arguments in questions of form. Dealing with various critical understandings of adaptation, the concept of the "unfilmablility" of certain novels and the treatment of the filmic version as an inferior remove from the original will be approached as a particular discourse specifically associated with a restricted understanding of the process of adaptation.
