Abstract: This thesis presents a translation and an analysis of part of the American novel 'Uncle Tom's Cabin' by Harriet Beecher Stowe, which deals with the conditions of the slaves in the pre-Civil War era. The translation is carried out on H.P Grice's cooperation maxims, i.e. the principles of quantity, quality, relevance and coherence. The target reader is always kept in mind, thus avoiding ambiguity, and creating a translation of the source text which is flowing and which does not sound 'foreign' in the target language. Furthermore, the analysis treats cultural problems related to the translation of the chosen text.
