Abstract: The aim of this study is to discuss in depth, the erection and alteration of new and existing hospitals and charitable institutions during the first half of the eighteenth century in the Maltese Islands. Due to the fact that the initiatives of the Order in Malta, in their various forms, were often very much influenced by what was going on in the major Catholic European capitals, this study also includes an insight into the works being carried out concurrently in Rome. The following chapters include a discussion of the administration and management of such organisations, in view of the latest sanitary measures of the time. This involves the study of their administration, their staff, and the methods adopted for the care of the sick patients. As part of this study, the present author also describes the events leading to the devastating plague of 1748 in Messina and its consequences on Malta. This was done after a thorough examination of a number of manuscripts found in the National Library in Valletta, which give a clear picture of the seriousness of the situation, and the Order's extensive attempts at keeping the Maltese Islands free of this infectious disease. In the final chapter, the author discusses the contribution of the Maltese medical staff, especially of two leading personalities in the field. These two personalities are Fra Giuseppe Zammit and Dr. Gabriele Henin, both active in the medical field in the eighteenth century.
