Abstract: Increasing traffic congestion, combined with the lack of opportunity to widen roads on such a small and densely built island, necessitates the exploration of other systems which make use of existing widths in order to cater for the ever-growing demand. This study investigates the possibility of implementing tidal-flow systems on the Maltese road network in order to combat problems of congestion without requiring costly infrastructural alterations which may not always be possible. This dissertation acknowledges the lack of practical examples applied on small scale networks, and thus, the requirement for research on the topic. Following a review and compilation of available literature and case studies of previously implemented schemes outside the country of study, it encompasses the requirements to create systematic analysis and design methods which are applicable. Furthermore, a choice of plausible road segments, through the analysis of available information was made, ultimately leading to further collection and analysis of data, through which three possible designs for road improvement were formulated. Two of the mentioned designs proposed different iterations of a tidal-flow system, which were then compared to a proposal which does not involve reversibility of lanes. Through this process, a method of analysis for road improvement was recommended, and the benefits of tidal-flow schemes, together with their applicability on a small-scale road network were highlighted.
