Abstract: Masonry construction has consistently been the main building system adopted across the Maltese Islands. Whereas unreinforced masonry boasts an undeniable capacity of carrying large compressive loads, it is also known to be particularly vulnerable to seismic actions, due to its limited resistance in bending. Contemporary construction often utilises precast concrete elements to achieve wide clear spans at basement level, lo allow for car parking. As observed in previous research, the removal of transverse walls at underlying levels causes a soft-storey effect in the structure.
