Abstract: The Republic of Maldives is located in the Indian Ocean, south west of India and Sri Lanka. It consists of 26 coral atolls, containing about 1190 very small islands, only 200 of which are inhabited. The Republic is estimated to be among the poorest island developing countries in the world and among the most densely populated. It has a narrow resource base because of its small land area and because of its lack of mineral or oil reserves. But despite this drawback, the country has managed to sustain itself and grow by exploiting sectors like fishing, shipping and tourism.
