Abstract: Observers of the global co-operative movement have, over the past decade, voiced their concern over the apparent decline of democratic control in Co operative societies. The scope of this project is to determine whether this trend is also evident in the local co-operative scenario. As a result of this analysis it will put forward a number of recommendations aimed at defining the role of professional management and safeguarding the status of co-operatives as democratic organisations.
