Abstract: Hardly known in his native country, Ioan Miclea was a Romanian Neo- Thomistic philosopher who flourished in the mid-twentieth century. A prolific writer on matters relating to philosophy, theology and literary criticism, he was respected by the leading scholars of the time, notably Jacques Maritain, Étienne Gilson and Réginald Garrigou-Lagrange. Despite the many manuscripts destroyed and/or confiscated by the Securitate, a significant number surfaced after 1989 and were subsequently published. Grounded in a biographical approach, namely the testimony of Miclea’s granddaughter expressed in an interview with the author via email, this article outlines the life of a man whose ultimate loyalty was the Greek Catholic Church.
