Abstract: This study is an analysis of the origins of sustainable development, its evolution, and the various approaches that have been employed in efforts by the international community and other-stakeholders to pursue sustainable development. As will be seen, the concept is an amalgamation of three concerns - environmental degradation, economic progress and social equity. The main developments in each of these fields, in particular the conferences that took place over the years, as well as the outcomes of these conferences are therefore outlined. Where possible, the disagreements, interests and effectiveness of such outcomes are also discussed. The recurring theme however, is that although considerable time, money and effort is invested in the pursuit of economic growth, the sustainable development approach is far from uniform and universally effective. In this respect, some say that it is already be too late to redress the effects of environmental damage on future generations. It is they who bear the burden of our comfort.
