Abstract: In this study, the cultural traits exhibited by migrant workers and the ensuing issues from having migrant workers on construction sites within the Maltese construction industry were analysed from a supervisory staff perspective, with a view to propose a set of recommendations for the better management of migrant workers on construction sites. A mixed-methods research approach was adopted. A quantitative approach was used to identify the cultural characteristics exhibited by migrant workers and the issues faced by supervisory staff. A qualitative approach was then adopted to find feasible solutions to overcome resultant issues whilst taking into consideration the cultural traits exhibited by migrant workers. It was found that the migrant workers' cultural traits indicate the importance of stability within their work-life in order to overcome uncertainty brought about through migration. It was also determined that communication issues between migrant workers and supervisory staff are common on construction sites. It resulted that racism is a common problem within the construction industry. In order to overcome such issues, this study calls for regularisation of the migrant workforce, the appointment of migrant workers (gatekeepers) who can understand the languages spoken on site as translators to their conationals, the provision of induction site training on the migrant workers' first visit to a construction site, the provision of health and safety signage in multiple languages, and the development of a strategy to tackle racism.
