| Abstract: | Compact urban development, although difficult to implement, has the potential to curb urban spawl. This concept is a means of sustainable city growth that concentrates on vertical development rather than horizontal expansion. In the light of this, the use of the underground to support aboveground spaces is becoming increasingly important. Shifting demographics coupled with the demand for improved liveability and environmental protection is creating a strong demand for new underground infrastructure. |
