Abstract: As a signatory of the United Nations Declaration on Environment and Development, Malta is committed to sustainable development. Waste policy has to be re-oriented to achieve this and the overall objective of the waste management strategy for the Maltese Islands (Strategy) shall be to ensure that waste management practices develop in accordance with the principles of sustainable development. Natural resources must be used efficiently, to prevent their depletion, and to minimise the environmental problems caused by waste. The waste that does arise should be recycled whenever this is cost effective, or otherwise disposed of in the most appropriate fashion.
