Abstract: The minerals in the earth's crust contain small and variable amounts of naturally occurring radioactive nuclides. These include isotopes of uranium and thorium which undergo a series of radioactive decays until they reach stable isotopes. The element radon exists as: 220Rn starting at 232Th and 222Rn from the 238u chain. Though unusual for a heavy element, radon is a gas and this means that it can escape from the rocks which contained its radioactive parents.
