Abstract: One of the most fascinating aspects of Maltese rural landscapes is the variety of historic structures which give agricultural areas their character and spirit and act as landmarks in the open space which surrounds them. Nowadays these buildings seldom retain their original use and as a result, little is known about the purpose for which they were constructed. Moreover, urbanisation and industrialisation has over the years engulfed many of these historic buildings and they have been consequently alienated from their original context. It is therefore of utmost importance to conserve such structures due to the fact that they have led to the shaping of our historic landscapes.
