Abstract: It is indeed surprising that the balcony - an element which constitutes such a consistently recurring feature in Maltese architecture does not seem to have ever been the subject of any study in depth. The balcony is a feature which has been in use even before the coming of the Knights when Malta experienced the erection of ma~ ambitious buildings and hence the emergence of an architecture worthy of note. This period has been dealt. with by several writers who have covered all the important building activities of the Knights as well as their contribution to the architecture of the Island.
