| Abstract: | Of those involved in the military situation of Malta in the Second World War, few would have had the time to pause and consider how the future would view the aftermath, the physical remains of special provision for the defence of the island in those times of suffering and fear. Fort Campbell at Tal-Blata is one of the last major coastal defences built by the British rulers which tells the story of the profound changes in warfare with industrialisation and its impact on the human experience. Our society has inherited this fort, and hence it is our responsibility to endorse our knowledge about it and strive for its correct preservation. This duty is not only towards future Maltese generations, but to the whole world. The conservation and reuse of Fort Campbell is a challenge which requires careful study and thought. Several proposals on the utilisation of the place have been made in the past, and yet its historical, architectural and military significance has never been studied fully. The dissertation tackles this problem by analysing the design of the fort through the historical background of the developments in military technology, the urban context of Malta's Second World War defensive network and through comparisons with case studies. Despite the recent official recognition of the historical value of Fort Campbell through the scheduling of the site and its surroundings, it is questionable if society has recognised such a monument as part of the island's long history of fortification. This comes out clearly in the author's presentation of the fort's post-war life and in many of the ideas for reusing it. The author therefore brings the study to a close with proposals for a reuse policy whose aim is to preserve and enhance the fort's cultural significance. |
