Abstract: | The architecture surrounding our landscape constitutes a large part of our national heritage. The Maltese Islands have witnessed a concoction of ruling nations and empires that kept motivating our culture for hundreds of years, shaping it into a distinctive mixture of cultures that also manifests itself in our built heritage. It is therefore one of our greater duties to safeguard these memories and journeys of antiquity to future generations. This dissertation seeks to analyse the reality of historic town centres today, by looking at foreign case studies to determine the required framework to keep them active, functional and sustainable at the very core of our society. Proposals and amendments to current national policies will follow to directly tackle the local scenario. |
