Abstract: In spite of the fact that a comprehensive study of the Victoria Lines has never materialised, one cannot deny its historical value and its contribution to Maltese heritage. The Victoria Lines has petrified the era of late nineteenth century British fortifications. Unfortunately, this is not always appreciated, as is manifested in the way 'development and progress' have encroached upon them. The majestic beauty and charm of the defences cannot be appreciated unless one walks along the escarpment, up and over ridges and down into valleys and often meandering among the contour. From Fomm ir-Rih to Madliena the panorama dominates over the northern part of the Island. One should not miss the experience of the continuous, everchanging and unexpected views.
