The performance of wall ties within globigerina limestone cavity walls

Abstract

This study presents the results of an experimental investigation to study the performance of metal ties used to tie the leaves of cavity walls built of Globigerina limestone blocks. The local cavity wall construction predominantly involves the use of bond stones. The strength of these walls under lateral loading conditions is a relatively indisputable matter. However, due to the relatively large number of bond stones used, this type of construction is frequently associated with water penetration problems. This problem is even more enhanced by the porous properties of Globigerina limestone The study of the perfomance of other forms of bonding between the two leaves of a Globigerina limestone cavity wall was thus deemed appropriate at this stage.
