Abstract: The selection of a stone water-repellent is generally made on previous experiences. The basic general requirements are those which concern the aesthetic appearance, effectiveness, and durability. A previous research carried out by Zammit (1989) has compiled information on the intrinsic properties on transparent stone protective coatings available locally. Among the products tested, silicone-based and acrylic-based treatments have given the most promising results. This work is a continuation of the investigations by Zammit, thus for this purpose, a selection of seven treatments, five silicone-based and two acrylic-based products were tested. The attempt was to evaluate their relative long term performance under accelerated weathering suited to the prevailing local climatic conditions. A secondary part of this work also involved the testing of naturally weathered samples as carried out by Zammit.
