Abstract: This dissertation is a study of Maltese filigree jewellery as it was made during the 19th century. The study provides a background on the history of filigree in Malta and its development. This is followed by research into to the realities of the 19th century in Malta and to the economic situation which faced the goldsmiths and silversmiths working at the time. The traditional workshop practices are looked at in detail, followed by a description of the actual assemblage of a jewel in filigree. The creative design of filigree jewellery is observed in the context of the period in question and its fashionable trends. A number of key Maltese jewellers are documented in relation to their importance related to filigree-making during the 19th century. The Great Exhibition of London of 1851 is also researched in relation to the participation of Maltese filigree makers.
