| Abstract: | This dissertation aims at capturing the importance of the Carmelite Church in Mdina from an art historical aspect. It will provide an overview of the history of the church; including its construction and the important roles it played in Mdina throughout the centuries. An architectural appreciation is given with special emphasis placed on the attribution of the plan of the church. The paintings and sculpture in the church will be discussed critically in the context of the church and the artistic scene on the island. The vast selection of important works of art in the church regrettably did not allow for an in depth study of various ‘objects d’art’ to be included in this dissertation; including the substantial collection of silverworks and vestments. These will thus be dealt with briefly and they will hopefully be given further attention in the near future. |
