Abstract: The objective of this dissertation is to provide a survey of the development of Maltese art from the Post World War period to the Contemporary and examine the origins of Modernist and Postmodernist Tendencies in Maltese art. The introduction provides a snippet of the main argumentations discussed throughout the dissertation and defines the concepts of Modernism, Modernist and Postmodernist Tendencies as taken to stand in this long essay. The First Chapter is intended to put into context the Post World War II artistic developments in Malta, thus concentrating on examining the advent and dissemination of Modernism in the local scene. It discusses the role of the Church as the main patron of art in Malta and the consequences it brings with it and also considers the general approach of Maltese critics and public towards art. This chapter will also take a look at institutions such as the School of Art and the Modem Art Circle and examine their importance in the introduction of Modernism on a local level. It considers the problems or defects of modernism in Malta and how these problems will affect the development of Modernist and Postmodernist trends. The Second chapter first discusses the important contributions of Duchamp, Malevich and also the Dada, Futurism and Constructivist movements in the development of art from the sixties onwards and then goes on to give a brief view of the international, mainstream artistic movements of the Post World War II period and to discuss the development of Minimal, Conceptual and Video Art.
