Citation: Gatt, E. (2001). Retractable membrane roof structures (Bachelor’s dissertation).
Abstract: Chapter 1 includes a general history about retractable membrane roof structures in different parts of the world and deals with their comeback during the last century. Chapter 2 deals with the different retractable membrane roof systems that have been used up to date. Chapter 3 deals with the different types of membrane materials and their respective properties. The jointing techniques used and the different types of cables and tendons used in such structures are also discussed. Chapter 4 is a foldability study of the membrane material during bunching. Chapter 5 deals with the different movement mechanisms for both cases were the retractable roof has a moveable or stationary supporting structure. It also deals with the serviceability aspects of such driving mechanisms. Chapter 6 deals with the present development in the field of retractable roofs. It also includes a study of the performance of different membrane materials when compared with other common building materials. Finally, on the basis of the research done and by taking into consideration the local climatic conditions and constraints, the dissertation considers the systems of retractable roofing that can be adopted locally.
