Abstract: Data compiled by the National Statistics Office indicates that there is a strong tendency for the demand for local pork and beef to decrease since Malta’s accession to the European Union. Data indicates an increase in foreign meat importation. The production that was geared towards the transformation of the industry is now being imported. This study was conducted to provide information and create awareness of the local pork and beef industry through a questionnaire with specific questions on consumer behaviour and preference regarding the consumption of pork and beef. Elaboration of the NSO statistical data, together with the questionnaire responses received, indicate an urgent need for more awareness on the quality of local meat. Furthermore, since price constantly features as a factor of concern, the sector needs incentives and aids to reduce their costs of production, and therefore reach a level of production cost that is compatible with market prices. Such measures will aid in increasing demand for the local product, thereby rendering the local livestock and meat industry overall more profitable and feasible.
