Abstract: | "This study focuses on the deterioration patterns exhibited by a chapel in Malta with the aim of proposing a method statement for the conservation of its façade. The chapel was constructed using mainly local Globigerina Limestone with a limited use of local Coralline Limestone. The building's architecture, location, materials and microclimate are discussed followed by a visual study of the deterioration found on the building's fabric using mapping techniques. The worst band of deterioration was located in the lower half of the façade. Samples were taken from this band, consisting of Globigerina and Coralline Limestone powdered samples and loose flakes. Subsequent laboratory analysis confirmed the strong presence of chloride and nitrate salts that were mobilised by rising damp. A discussion outlining the mechanisms of the deterioration patterns follows. Examples of various conservation methods and materials are then presented with the aid of case studies and their efficacy discussed. Based on all the information and discussions presented throughout the study, a method statement for the conservation of the façade is proposed." |
