This Department, one of ten within the Faculty of Health Sciences, is responsible for undergraduate teaching leading to a B.Sc. (Hons) in Applied Biomedical Science (previously Medical Laboratory Science). The specific aim of the degree programme is to produce high quality graduates with expertise in all the experimental and routine aspects of a pathology laboratory and with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required for the study and interpretation of pathological processes. Such graduates can also work in industry or pursue a career in research. The Department has an active research programme, in areas which include: Genetics of Osteoporosis, Inflammation, Atherosclerosis and Myocardial Infarction, Genetics of Tetrahydrobiopterin Deficiences and Transcriptional Regulation and Control of Globin Gene Expression. The Department is currently expanding its doctoral programme.
