Abstract: The subject of the regeneration of Valletta, the capital City of Malta, from an architectural perspective should feature prominently in the formulation of a complete critique on proposals to regenerate the City. Since numerous views consider the issue primarily from a social and economic perspective, the aesthetic potential may end up being given secondary importance with respect to its regeneration potential. This dissertation formulates an understanding of the aesthetic impact that various architectural developments have on the Baroque City of Valletta and attempts to identify the contribution that these projects give in regenerating the City. It may be argued that, in spite of current norms and recommendations on the preservation and the regeneration of historic cities, it is apparent that there was no common methodology adopted for the projects carried out in the City of Valletta and reviewed for the scope of this study. The aesthetic impact affects the manner of how the buildings are perceived by their users and casual observers. This perception may be positive or negative, as aesthetic appreciation tends to be subjective. Nonetheless, the study concludes that the projects have been, overall, well received, and attracted people towards them. In the opinion of the author, this is in line with the aims of a regeneration plan that claims to he competent, thus emphasising the relationship between the intrinsic aesthetic value of any development and its role within a regeneration plan.
