Abstract: Throughout the years, utopian and dystopian fiction writers have used literature to critique problematic aspects of society in an attempt to incite social change. Feminist writers in particular have used the subgenre to challenge sexist stereotypes and institutions which control and discriminate against women. As society as a whole progresses, so too does the specific focus of each wave of the feminist movement, which consequently affects the topics of feminist writers’ texts. However, one cannot look at positive socio-political advancements without also considering some negative reversions. Unfortunately, human nature compels people to be stuck in their ways, and thus, the negative viewpoints of conservatives sometimes inhibit social progress. This dissertation explores how this manifests itself in feminist utopian and dystopian literature. It discusses Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s 'Herland' (1915), Marge Piercy’s 'Woman on the Edge of Time' (1976), and Leni Zumas’s 'Red Clocks' (2018), to show how they provide a record of the nonlinearity of the progression of gender equality within society. These novels also encourage readers to not lose hope, as despite instances of social regression, especially in contemporary times, we must continue to strive for a better future.
