Abstract: The Centre for the Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS), in collaboration with the University of Malta Library, is organizing an exhibition featuring photographs taken by seven students who followed the ‘Nature Photography Study Tour’ (LAS3003) within the University’s Programme in the Liberal Arts and Sciences (PLAS). The exhibition, which will be set up in the University Library’s foyer, will be inaugurated on 8 February and will run through 18 March. The photographs were taken in Sicily between the 12 and 14 June 2015. Coordinated by Mr Guido Bonett, who is also curating the exhibition, the study tour enabled the participants to experience and practice photography in conditions and habitats that are not typically found in the Maltese Islands. The first outing was to Bosco di Malabotta, a nature reserve in Messina, considered to be one of the last remaining natural woodland in Sicily. This was followed by Rocche Dell’Argimusco, a site characterized by the rock formations found here and the surrounding meadows, which provided the group with plenty of opportunities to photograph various species of butterflies. The second day saw the group travel to Syracuse to visit Riserva Naturale Pantalica - Valle Dell’Anapo, a UNESCO site. This impressive range of gorges, with waterfalls, lakes and streams, provided an adequate environment to photograph dragonflies, damselfies, wall lizards and a host of different flora. The last day of the tour was spent exploring parts of the Mount Etna National Park in the province of Catania. The black stark landscape provided the group with extraordinary opportunities for landscape photography.
