An appreciation of two monastic complexes in Rabat

Abstract

The Maltese Islands present a vast field of study regarding ecclesiastical buildings. However, these studies have been centered around the architecture of the various churches. No research seems to have been carried out on ecclesiastical buildings concerning monastic complexes which have taken root in Malta after the wake of the Mendican Orders in Italy·The first monasteries were established in the suburb of the Old Capital in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Since I was born and bred in Rabat, I have always been fascinated by their grandeur. In this dissertation I have concentrated on two monastic complexes, namely St.Francis Church and Friary and the Church and Prior of Our Lady of the Grotto (commonly known as St.Dominic's). I have delved into their historical development commencing from the establishment of their first abode to the present day and also conducted an architectural appreciation of the existing churches and convents. For the purpose of this study, St.Francis Church and Friary had to be measured and their appropriate plans draughted. The old manuscripts stored in the archives of the monasteries have been my main source of information. This dissertation contains all the facts that I have managed to unravel. However, further information can be added on if the relevant documentation is found. If this dissertation can impel the readers appreciating the exhaustive effort executed by the friars, common people and masons to erect majestic buildings, then in this respect it has successful, and my aim has been reached.
