Abstract

Consequently, this is resulting in additional pressure on the pension scheme. Indeed, there is much debate on this at present, due to the fact that if the current pension system is not reformed, its sustainability may be threatened. Thus the aim of this study is to identify the main problems that are currently posing a threat to the sustainability of the Pay-As-You-Go (PA YO) pension scheme. Furthermore, it seeks to highlight the present on-going debate regarding several possible reform methods to the above-mentioned pension system. Its aim is not to present solutions to the problem, but to illustrate the pros and cons of several solutions available at hand, so as to be able to choose the optimal reform method for the Maltese Islands.
