| Abstract: | In this long essay, the methods used for restoration and binding at the Malta National Library will be explored in depth. The research will start by a brief history of the National Library and how the restoration and binding processes started out at the institution. The development of their methods throughout the years until they adopted the procedures used at this day and age will also be dealt with. Interviews were also carried out with preservation experts who are actually doing the work and various issues discussed in these interviews shall also be mentioned in this essay, including also what needs to be done in order to improve the current state of restoration and binding, as well as measures taken in conservation and preservation issues. The materials used in such processes will also be looked into, as well as the rationale for selecting materials most appropriate for conservation and preservation. The aim of this study was to understand how the process of binding and restoration is tackled at the National Library and as well compare it with what other institutions like the National Archives and the Bighi Restoration and Conservation Centre do, and thus conclude to what should be done to improve current situations. |
