An analytical bibliography of newspapers in Maltese : 1839-1939

Abstract

The proposed long essay has multiple objectives. It aims at creating an analytical bibliography of all newspapers in Maltese, whether political, satirical or religious; published in Malta from the 1839 to 1939. This should prove to be a valuable reference tool for researchers in the field, in particular the political, anthropological and cultural spheres. It is expected to serve also as an information platform to enhance public awareness with respect to the vast collection of newspapers treasured at the National Library and a comprehensive stock-take of the same collection. This long essay will go beyond the collection of the National Library and will also include newspapers which are found in other public and private collections and newspapers that are missing from such collections. It will lay particular emphasis on the provision of a comprehensive description of the newspapers, namely the title, the owners and / or publishers, the run of the periodical, the place of publication, the year of the last issue, the frequency of publication. Analytical information on the particular newspaper being described will be included also.
